Kav LaOved’s lawsuit, in partnership with Hanny Ben-Israel and the Legal Clinics in IDC Herzilya, exposed that there is never a shortage of creativity on the part of employers when it comes to getting cheap labor.
This is how students from developing countries throughout the world, who came to study advanced agricultural techniques in Tel Aviv University, were turned into fieldworkers performing hard manual labor in Israel’s agricultural fields for 12-16 hours per day, provided with little to no educational training and exempt from the protections or rights afforded by Israel’s labor laws.
And who was the employer behind this scheme? The business partner who was supposed to provide the “practicum” of the program? The Arava Development Program.
