TEL AVIV — Fearing for his life Ghirmay Birhane fled to Israel from his native Eritrea six years ago. Two weeks ago, after waiting all these years for the Israel government to review his application for refugee status, he finally felt the need to join thousands of other Africans in a strike to force the government to recognize the asylum seekers basic human rights.
